3 day Liver Cleanse – it’s easier than you think!
There’s some debate as to whether the human body really needs a ‘cleanse’. Do we need to fast and ‘rest’ our system? Or does our system have its own wisdom?
Both are true.
Our liver and kidneys have the job of removing dangerous compounds that enter our body through the air, or water or food. They are designed to detox our body, that is their job.
The amount of functions that are tied to the liver would boggle your mind:
- Controlling blood sugar
- Regulating fat storage
- Producing proteins
- Cleansing the blood
- Metabolizing fat
- Producing energy
Are just some of its functions. To top it off, the liver is the only organ in the body that literally regenerates.
Why then, would it need a detox? Can’t it simply take care of itself?
Picture this: You have 1 strainer in your kitchen. It’s meant to strain tea. You cook a big batch of vegetable soup and realize that you just have that one trusty strainer. You pour all your soup into it, and realize that its not designed for that kind of work, because now your kitchen counter is flooded with soup.
Picture this: You are ready to leave for home just before the weekend. You’ve completed all your assignments, checked your inbox, closed all communications and are just waiting for 5pm to log out and go home. At 450pm, your boss comes in and dumps a pile of paperwork to push through before you are free to go. Overwhelm Much? That’s exactly what your liver goes through.
We are bombarded with a daily influx of toxins from our environment, the least of which are probably sugar, the worst of which are additives in food or ‘fake’ food (that’s another article). Though our body is quite good at handling a lot of pressure, sometimes it gets overwhelmed, like that backed up strainer. If the liver cannot cleanse the toxins from the body effectively, those toxins can trigger an immune response which not only can burden the immune system but possibly lead to autoimmune diseases such as arthritis.
The body expresses this overload in a number of ways, and if we are listening, the system will have some of these warning signs:
- food allergies
- fatty liver (elevated liver enzymes)
- high blood pressure
- dark circles
- skin conditions
- brain fog
- digestive problems such as heartburn and bloating
A 3 day detox diet and lifestyle schedule rests and resets your liver so that it’s free to do it’s real job – rather than firefighting all the time. This cleanse has a 3 pronged approach – Diet, Exercise(or rather active rest) and Mindset.
Lets get started, shall we?
DIET : The 3 day liver cleanse
Start day with 1 mug warm water with 1tsp apple cider vinegar OR 1 mug warm water with Juice of ½ lime + pinch of haldi
3-4 tablespoons oats cooked in water with a dash of cinnamon
1 cup black coffee or tea
1 beetroot, 1 carrot, 1 tomato, ½ inch ginger, rock salt and a dash of lime jc
2 cup steamed veggies with salt and pepper +
½ katori steamed white or brown rice / quinoa + garlic olive oil* to toss it through + 1 tablespoon toasted walnuts chopped up.
1 cup green tea. (made from loose leaves)
1 cup fruit (permitted fruits are apple, pineapple, any citrus especially grapefruit, avocado)
1 cup homemade vegetable soup
Light Mungdal khichdi with 1/4tsp ghee and a squeeze of lime
½ cup water with ½ tsp apple cider vinegar
For these 3 days, eliminate SUGAR, ALCOHOL, FRIED FOODS, NON VEG, and limit your fat intake to the olive oil dressing and the pure ghee as per the diet.
This diet is to be followed for 3 days. You may feel a headache, nausea or need to rest and sleep a lot – this is normal for a body that is cleasing, especially where the liver is concerned.
I prefer to start this phase over a weekend (that may eat into the partying a bit – but I suppose you must already be partied out if you need this cleanse!) The sleepiest day seems to be day two, which is super if it falls on a Sunday. Feel free to adjust the days as per your convenience.
No strenuous exercise during this 3 day period. This is an active rest period for your body. Just a selection of yoga poses to lower stress hormones & gently coax the liver to do its job. It’s just 3 poses. Take each position and hold for a minimum of 5 deep breaths.
This cleanse is not complete without addressing the emotional cleanse we need as well. During this three day phase, try and eliminate:
- Social Media
- Electronic devices
- Mean or grouchy people
- Pollution, Plastic and Processed Junk.
This cleanse will set you on the path for
